The transformation began millions of years ago as the cloud of gas now called earth began to cool. Minerals were formed and one known as iron lay beneath the surface. Common but unknown to man for centuries. Herb the knifemaker uses some of that iron, when combined with carbon nickel, chromium, tungsten and other minerals to craft some of the very best blades he knows how.
From a bar of raw high grade steel, he will cut, grind, shape and heat until a blade is transformed from a grey/black shape into a gleaming tool, one that is used everyday in every kitchen and industry in the world. His hands are sinewed from the hours of hand polishing, but many more steps take place before he looks at his labour and is content with a most efficient, beautiful knife. A labour of love for his craft which will be carried on by more like him in the future. Maybe in the Boreal Forest of Manitoba?
