For 20 years, Janine Bergamot has been interested in the concept of “Portable Art”. Feeling that in a digital world where much is accessible through a screen but personal connection is remote, the experience of art in the hand and not behind glass becomes more important. She began exploring it through the medium of jewelry in 2014.

“While a lot of art is only meant to be looked at, I love creating art that is meant to be touched and worn. Whether it’s a delicate or bold piece, I hope to share my creative vision in a very accessible way. The tactile experience of a piece is important to me. What I really enjoy about personally showing my art in public is talking with people and learning about the associations they make or the personal connections they feel as they handle the work.”

Janine’s jewelry is often inspired by the focal elements themselves, but also incorporates interpretations of events, memories, and the natural world. Some pieces begin as narratives, notes, and word collages which then evolve into sketches where details of colour, materials, and type of weave are translated from the writing. She has become known as a bit of a storyteller in this way, and often shares the background of her work’s details with visitors. This year she’s invited other artists and makers to gain a window into her approach by creating a Facebook group that gives bi-weekly personal art challenges starting with a single word.

Janine received her Fine Arts Degree at the University of Manitoba and is a member of the Manitoba Craft Council as well as Cre8ery Gallery in Winnipeg. In 2019, she was invited to have her jewelry included in the Wasagaming Gallery Boutique in Riding Mountain National Park. Her one-of-a-kind and custom pieces are worn in the UK, USA, Germany, France, and across Canada.
